The Salve

A handcrafted, small-batch salve made with botanical oils and nothing you don't need.

The Salve jar

The Salve is a thick, balm-like salve designed for daily use on hands, elbows, lips, and anywhere skin needs a little extra care. It absorbs without leaving a greasy residue and keeps working throughout the day.

We make it in small batches; each jar is filled by hand, labelled by hand, and shipped with care.

How to use: Warm a small amount between your fingers and apply to dry or rough skin as needed. A little goes a long way.

What's inside

A short, honest ingredient list.

We believe you should know exactly what you're putting on your skin. The Salve is built on three simple base ingredients and eight botanical herbs we steep ourselves. Every plant is chosen on purpose. Nothing is there to fill space.

Olive oil The backbone of The Salve. Extra-virgin olive oil has been a skin care staple for as long as people have had dry hands. Rich in fatty acids, it sinks in gently and leaves skin feeling fed, not coated. We use it as the primary carrier for all eight of our botanical infusions.

Shea butter Pressed from the nut of the African shea tree, shea adds a slow, creamy richness that olive oil alone can't quite give. It softens as it warms between your fingers, and it stays with your skin longer than most oils will.

Beeswax This is what gives The Salve its body. Beeswax draws everything together into a dense, spreadable consistency and lays a light protective layer over skin without smothering it. We source ours from small domestic apiaries.

Lavender We infuse dried lavender flowers directly into the oil. The scent is soft and real, nothing sharp, nothing synthetic. On skin, lavender is gentle and comforting. It has been a part of homemade skin preparations for a very long time, and for good reason.

Blue sage We grow up around sage out here, and it felt right to put it in. The scent is earthy and clean, a little piney, and it balances the sweetness of the lavender the way it always has in the hills. Blue sage is infused slowly to draw out its full character.

Calendula The bright orange petals of the calendula flower have a long tradition in handmade skin preparations. We steep them in the oil for weeks before the salve is made. They lend a golden warmth, visible in the oil, felt on the skin. Calendula is one of the gentler botanicals we work with.

Chamomile German chamomile flowers, dried and steeped. Chamomile is mild and sweet, and it brings a quiet softness to the blend. It's the kind of ingredient that you might not notice on its own — you'd notice if it wasn't there.

Rosemary Fresh rosemary from the garden goes into our infusion. It adds a bright, slightly herbaceous note that cuts through the heavier base oils and keeps the whole thing from feeling too heavy in warm weather. A little goes a long way.

Bergamot Bergamot comes from a small citrus fruit grown mainly in southern Italy. Its essential oil has a distinctive lift: bright and floral, with just a hint of citrus underneath. We use it sparingly. It rounds out the herbal character of the salve without taking over.

Yarrow Yarrow is one of those wildflowers that has appeared in handmade preparations for generations. We steep the dried flowers and leaves. In the finished salve, yarrow is quiet. It contributes to the overall character of the botanical blend rather than standing forward on its own.

Arnica Arnica flowers are slow-infused in olive oil for several weeks before anything else begins. We have always kept arnica in the formula because it belongs there since it is a traditional botanical with a long history in handmade skin preparations, and it fits what The Salve is meant to be.
